04 Jan 2025 Guest Speaker: Ada Castle Company: Cancer Council Victoria Contact: 13 11 20
A very interesting and informative presentation on 7 ways to prevent Cancer. Ada talked about Prostate cancer being the number one on the top of the cancer list. She also said that bowel cancer is most common among men then women. She illustrated how to use the bowel test kit that is sent by the government for free in every two years to every eligible person aged 45 to 74 in Australia. Also Ada explained how you can arrange to get the kit after 75 by talking with your GP, it may be possible to arrange through Medicare.
Living a healthy lifestyle e.g. having regular exercise, eating healthy food, not smoking and reduced alcohol consumption can significantly decrease the risk of cancer, although they are not necessarily exclusive preventative measures. Cancer can happen to anyone regardless of age and gender, albeit she highlighted that with ageing the chance of having cancerous cells in our body can increase, therefore she encouraged everyone to have a regular blood and bowel test to ensure early detection of malignancy if it occurs. The talk was interactive and informative, particularily on the ways to detect bowel cancer a major source of Cancer in aged men.

EGV – Emroiderers Guild Victoria
We had some representatives Heather McDougall, Susan Simonet and Sam Nicol from Emroiderers Guild Victoria on the 18th of February. Heather was talking about the history of this Austrlia wide organisation and how they started the guild in victoria. Sam with much enthusiasm told us his story of how he as a retired farmer became a devoted and passionate member of the guild. Susan told us about the variety of embroidery what members of the guild are producing and we learned that embroidery is rather an umbrella term for a form of art work what is created by using needles and materials such as wool thread and canvas. Similarly to us Embroiderers Guild Victoria is offering involvement, social connection, cognitive stimulation and mateship to those who are not looking for competitive work stress and financial stability anymore, but rather wanting to learn a new skill in a friendly and relaxing environment. Embroiders Guild Victoria is a non-profit organisation promoting education, sharing and community. They have branches all around the state and their headquarter is in Wattletree Rd. Malvern. Everyone is welcome who wanting to learn traditional and contemporary embroidery and textile art. Ph: (03) 9509 2222
